The theory was tested by having students place their hands in ice-cold water and seeing how long they can keep their hands in it. Using an independent group design, the students in condition 1 were asked to swear while performing the task, while the students in condition 2 were asked to say phrases other than swear words. The study found that students can keep their hands longer in the cold-water while they swore than when they use other phrase.
